Early puppy training is a great start to your life with your new puppy. Even if they are the sweetest most confident puppy in the world you can't replicate the advantages of a puppy class in real life. The irony is if you do take your puppy to class you will never know how they might have developed if you didn't!

I find as well as social skills, classes teach your puppy impulse control and important skills of concentration and focus with distractions. It is a great place to practice how to communicate clearly with your puppy and to pick up some good advice about behaviour.

For example in class this week an owner told me how she was teaching her puppy manners around food by taking her food bowl away while she was eating. The idea being that it showed the puppy she was boss.

I suggested she did the opposite. Instead of taking food away you add food to the bowl as your puppy is eating. If you ask yourself how would you feel if the person who you should trust  constantly takes things away you, can you see how this could be dangerous advice! Likewise how would you feel about your owner if they added to your food bowl?

This is where you need to check with the credentials of your trainer. How qualified are they to give you advice that will shape your puppy's future life? A puppy trainer has a huge responsibility to give you sound advice.

Impulse control isn't about shouting at your dog. It is about teaching them patience and how to wait. I feel these are such important life skills to teach a young dog. I feel that teaching your puppy to be a problem solver, to have impulse control, good social skills and to enjoy their relationship with their owners goes a long way to having a well adjusted adult dog.

It really does make a difference! Try it and see!

I have been meaning to email you for ages to say how absolutely fantastic the classes you offer were. I have been scanning your website to see whether you were going to do the Bronze Kennel Club Award but nothing came up so I ended up doing it with a local club.... and shall I tell you something... your classes... your organisation.... the tasks you get the dogs to do.... your manner... not to mention other numerous qualities by far, and I mean by far supersedes what I have recently experienced. I honestly don't think I have learnt anything new in the last 8 weeks. Anyway Karen many thanks for everything you provided Tilly with in those sessions...they were just fab...thank you so much...please keep me informed should you be offering any other courses as I would be very interested.
