How to find a good puppy training class

04 September 2013

Taking your puppy to a well run puppy class gives you and your puppy the best start to your lives together. People are often surprised that as a professional trainer I would still take any new puppy I own to a class.

A  well managed class gives you a chance to socialise and train your puppy in a safe controlled environment. Each dog is unique and you will always pick up tips on how to get the best out of your new dog even if you have owned dogs all your life.

Unfortunately dog and puppy training is an unregulated business, so how do you find a good class?

Vets are often a good place to start for recommendations of good local classes. If in doubt ask to watch a class before enrolling your puppy. I feel there is a difference between an instructor and a teacher. The class trainer is coaching you how to teach your puppy so you need to feel comfortable with the person teaching you!

It is important the class is using up to date training methods using only positive reinforcement. Some classes mix in a few stern words used on puppies and owners! I want owners and puppies to feel inspired, encouraged and supported. It is important the classes are calm, friendly places to learn and you don't feel worried that your puppy is going to be labelled a bad dog.

The Association of Pet Dog Trainers is a good place to find good, reliable local trainers. Trainers who are members go through a strict process to join and punitive methods are not allowed in class Their website is www.apdt.co.uk

Lastly ask your friends who have dogs. If the same name keeps cropping up it is a good chance you will have found your trainer!

Testimonial

I have been meaning to email you for ages to say how absolutely fantastic the classes you offer were. I have been scanning your website to see whether you were going to do the Bronze Kennel Club Award but nothing came up so I ended up doing it with a local club.... and shall I tell you something... your classes... your organisation.... the tasks you get the dogs to do.... your manner... not to mention other numerous qualities by far, and I mean by far supersedes what I have recently experienced. I honestly don't think I have learnt anything new in the last 8 weeks. Anyway Karen many thanks for everything you provided Tilly with in those sessions...they were just fab...thank you so much...please keep me informed should you be offering any other courses as I would be very interested.
